Can't wait for the guide that turns my Xbox into a Steam Machine!

So far this only works on Xbox Ones produced in 2013 I believe.

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 270 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Because the exploit targets the boot ROM burned into silicon, Microslop can't patch it. Every Xbox One ever manufactured is vulnerable, and always will be. The hack gives complete access to everything — the Hypervisor, the operating system, the ability to run unsigned code at every privilege level. Games and firmware can be decrypted, which could open the door to emulation projects and eventual mod chips.

Xbox exclusives coming soon to SteamDeck.

Amazing! Let's take a look at all the exclusives for xbox!

Dude OG Xbox was GOAT for emulation and entertainment. Kodi got its start there, as xbmc.

I'd be so excited to have that again.

Does this apply to X|S or just Xbone?

[–] tomalley8342@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It only applies to the 2013 model of the original Xbox One. Later Xbox Ones have more stringent checks.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 7 points 20 hours ago

Emulating the former is good enough for games preservation (or whatever you decide to do with the games).

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I still have an OG Xbox with an emulator and the SNES romset and Conker's Bad Fur Day on another partition (I did the mod to install a larger HDD). All it took was a hacked save and a Mechwarrior game.

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 4 points 19 hours ago

I do too. I use it at least once a month and still love it. It will be a very annoying day when that hard drive finally fails.

Nice. I used Splinter Cell to mod mine.

The dcemulation scene walked so Xbox emulation could run emulated software in new an innovative ways ;3

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Ah mate, that was a great community back in the day.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

My duuuuude <3

It was MINDBLOWING to me hahaha. I’m thinking “BUT IT’S NOT EVEN A GD-ROM AND IT WORKS AND I CAN PLAY SECRET OF MANA?!”

[–] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 4 points 21 hours ago

Amazing stuff, the devs were a decent bunch too, I distinctly remember pestering a dev to create a save game loader that would write saves from a disk to a vmu on the irc channel for wraggster's dcemu forum. Might have to dig out my old Dreamcast if it still lives.

this would be funnier, were it not so sad

Oh wait, it's sad for Microslop so it's even funnier!!!!

Are there any XBOX One games that aren't also on PC? Steam Deck can already run most of those.

I guess there's Rare Replay, but all of those game are already playable on the Steam Deck individually.

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 25 points 1 day ago (3 children)
[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 28 minutes ago* (last edited 27 minutes ago)

Well Rare Replay includes a few games in it that imo are fucking classics like Conker (but the best version is Live and Reloaded), Ghoulies, Battletoads, Banjo, Viva Pinata, but most of those are available on pc by other methods afaik, just not bundled with "Rare Replay" (which means Conker is better emulated on the xbox OG, because bot battles Squirrel v Bear.)

[–] carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 22 hours ago

ironically, one of the xbox one games people are most interested in porting to pc is the legacy console edition of minecraft, a game famously already on pc!

tho with the recent source code leak of LCE idk if there’s still much enthusiasm

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Ah, I didn't know about the others! Slim pickins like the PS5, although that has a few that are notably pretty good.

[–] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

"but but but we put Halo 5 Forge on PC that's what you gamers wanted right?"

— Microslop, probably

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I thought it was only the release version of the console that was vulnerable. Was there a breakthrough in the last two days?

[–] chrash0@lemmy.world 140 points 1 day ago (3 children)

“unhackable” is a bit sensationalized here. the Xbox One is actually a security success story not because it is impossible to hack, but because it’s a rare example of a console that wasn’t hacked in its service lifetime. at the risk of giving praise to Microsoft, the architecture is actually really neat and informed the security features of subsequent Windows releases, ie a hypervisor with sandboxed sub containers (this is why they required TPMs).

(also i’m not agreeing with requiring a TPM for general purpose machines; they make sense on a bespoke hardware platform like a game console)

i bet this hack is nuts, but the blue team deserves some level of kudos

I feel like allowing users to access dev mode played a large part in this as well. Without the option surely it would have been cracked sooner.
Which is a great lesson in and of itself for tech companies willing to listen.

And that is why they NDA anyone who touches a dev kit.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

This whole post, including your point, is basically just mirroring what MVG said in this video: https://youtu.be/Evi6IDgjPD0

[–] cheat700000007@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago

Dev mode should be considered as part of that success. It devalued hacking the system in the first place. It's not going to be hacked if people aren't trying.

[–] subignition@fedia.io 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Reasonable and nuanced take, you love to see it!

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The fuck it is! What am I gonna do with this pitchfork now?

They're great for tearing the shingles off of a roof!

[–] org@lemmy.org 33 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Dont challenge people by calling something “unhackable”

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 57 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, it took almost 13 years and the product itself was discontinued six years ago

[–] yggstyle@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Tools and methods used to jailbreak this generation can and will be refined and used on the next one. It should be noted that the full force of the hacking community wasn't behind this effort. The homebrew function placated a lot of people. Had microslop pulled a sony and yanked a feature or not provided that outlet: I'd imagine we'd have seen more exploits sooner.

[–] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

The unhackable Switch 2!

[–] ugjka@lemmy.ugjka.net 10 points 1 day ago

I watched the talk and the demo, the bar is pretty high. But the good news that a relatively simple modchip should be possible

[–] db2@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Everything is hackable if you're determined. Even an air gapped computer in a locked room.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 5 points 20 hours ago

If it isn't hackable then it's hackable.

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 9 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)
[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So depending on the specs it might be fun to get a used Xbox One and turn it into a steam machine. Better it'll be done within 2 years.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Weird, I was looking at my dusty xbox one on the shelf yesterday and I looked up if it was hackable yet. It would make such a good TV PC.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You should look at more things and wonder if they're hackable.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They can start with my bank account, I could use a sudden unexplained surge of funds...

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Aaand your crypto wallet is hacked.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

"wait why is there only 1 dogecoin in here?"

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago
