I wouldn’t push a woman down the stairs, but I could see myself writing an essay on why only dumb people can tolerate loud noises and that being loud should be made illegal.

can confirm, am dumbasses, like loud noisy music
loud noisy music actually doesn't bother me as much as say, quiet, crinkly plastic being wrapped/unwrapped.
you'd have my vote
Everyone get in here, we're voting on essays!
And my axe!
Hey I think you tried to store json in a string field

I'm not autistic, nor have I ever gravely injured someone through my own action (or inaction) that I know of, but I will tell you this: I don't understand how these attention-starved children driving these rice burners with their goddamn POW POW UNF POW exhaust systems (and you fuckers know what I'm talking about) are allowed to exist.
I am not a violent person, but I would read their obituaries with great satisfaction.
Dass only in the mornin'.
Iss like a alarm clock.
Iss dat woo WOO!

Just for decoration!
But how else will they tell everyone that they're big and tough?
My current street is horrible for noise. These idiots speed down my road with external speakers blasting bass or Celine dion all throughout the night all throughout the week. The fuel crisis has not slowed them down at all.
I need remote activated road spikes.
As a former rider who had a very quite bike and almost got killed by a driver, I totally understand the desire to have a noisy bike. Noisy bikes save lives.
Noisy bikes piss off your neighbors. Loud pipes DON’T save lives, they make people hate you. Car cabins have become quieter over the years and all you do is get louder for no reason.
Want to be safe? Follow the rules of the road. Don’t weave in and out of cars. Be predictable. DON’T lane split. Be visible (don’t wear all black at night). These are the only types of bikers I ever see.
If Reddit and Lemmy have taught me anything, it’s that if ACAB then AMAA (All Motorcyclists Are Assholes)
This advice only works if car and truck drivers also follow it
Correct, and people suck at driving.
The front of every driving manual should have this in big bold letters: “Don’t be polite, be predictable.”
I never did any of that stuff, nor does anyone I know. A minority of, often younger riders, give a bad impression.
You can be as safe as you want but when another car merges into you on the highway, there is nothing you can do other than evasive manuevers and hope that you don't get killed.
Want to make the roads safe? Actually enforce distracted driving, it's almost as if not just as dangerous as drunk driving, and we take away licences for that. Retest drivers and riders every 5 years, and every 3 years for anyone over 65.

Just like with police. A minority of bad cops give all cops a bad name.

Same can be said for a truck merging on to a person in a car.

Yes. But we’d need a more robust mass transit system or walkable towns/cities. I’m all for that, but not everyone is.

Except motorcyclists aren't an inherent part of a purposely oppressive system that routinely does horrific things as a core part of its working.
If a motorcyclist calls another out for bad behavior they don't (usually) have to risk their life and livelihood to do so.
ACAB comes from the idea that it's not possible to remain in that group as a subjectively good person.
I get it, you hate motorcyclists, possibly for good reason but the idea that a genuine equivalence exists between them and police is absurd.

I get the impression that's supposed to be some kind of gotcha, kinda seems like projection though.
If you don't want to (or feel like you can't) engage on a point, no one is forcing you, it says enough that this is your response.
In case anyone else is curious, the essay is simply titled "On Noise."
Edit: here's a Project Gutenberg link
why do I have to log in to read something "free online"? ahh..
I read it on virtual library, thank you though.
I feel this way about lawn mowers. Id probably hate whip cracking too. Fun read
biblioklept.org
Flawless choice of domain name. No notes.
Fuckin jstor pay walling this kind of stuff is wild
"Ueber Lerm und Geräusch" in original.
In case anyone was curious
We need a work named "On jstor"
just abolish jstor and the likes
being loud should be made illegal
Joke is that it did. Now Germany has its Nachtruhe
I’m an immigrant in Germany and my boss (from here) recently asked me if it was a jerk move to do laundry on a Sunday if she checked with her neighbors first.
It made me realize I’ve been such an unintentional asshole. I’ve been avoiding things like carpentry and band practice, not laundry. There’s a guy on my street who mows the lawn before nine in the morning on Sundays though, so I’m not the worst in my neighborhood.
There’s a guy on my street who mows the lawn before nine in the morning
These people are the worst
Nah, it's fine. Only the younguns sleep that long.
I don't think anyone actually cares about washing machines on sundays, as long as they're not running after 22:00 ... though YMMV based on how anal your neighbors are and how much they hate you.
Also, fuck lawn mowing and leaf blowing in the morning. And all those assholes who accelerate their cars and motorcycles loudly for fun.
That's not a common thing? Nighttime disturbance being illegal?
Excessive noise is bad, violence is worse. Moral licensing for escalating is a hell of a drug.
violence is fine, just has to precise and for the right purpose
"This is the worst kind of violence, the kind against me!"
- everyone everywhere ever
Same with noise lol
So what would be appropriate response for excessive noise? Sand in their shoes?
Be 4chan OP
Unable to use the word "woman", apparently.
Contrast Charles Babbage, who was actively harassed by deliberately shitty street musicians, whose business model was to be paid to fuck off.
Posts like these make me glad I can sleep through pretty much anything. It might wake me up but I can just ignore it once I've identified it isn't a threat of some sort and go back to sleep.
Only time I can think of that this wasn't the case was one time when I lived in a basement apartment, the landlord must have been installing hardwood floors or something right above my room as I was trying to sleep in. I eventually gave up and my coworkers were surprised to see me in early that day lol (still later than any of them, landlord wasn't being an asshole with the time).
That said, people who do loud things because they want attention are assholes (outside of specific contexts like concerts).
this guy was so unbelievably based
man gets annoyed by loud noises, escalates to violence
Sooooo based, bro
